Amaya knew Kanan'd be coming over later that day to pick out a temporary weapon, and she'd already gone through most of them and deemed them in pretty tip-top shape, but after all that soft work yesterday, she definitely needed to get her hands on something hard. Easy enough! It was a nice day, and she never minded an opportunity to roll out the Crumbler and work on her, giving her a few pats of apology that she hadn't had much to do since coming to the island.

"One of these days," she assured it, "just you wait."

In the meantime, then, she could tighten her screws, sharpen her blades, check the tension in her pulleys and levers, grease up her gears, maybe change the treads on her wheels, clean up her pipes, make 'em all shiny and nice. Not a bad way to whittle away some time while you were waiting for someone, although it wound up just making Amaya wonder if anyone would really even miss a few trees if they'd gone missing from the preserve...

"Ooooh," Amaya's pride was momentarily diverted, "I think I might have to have a look at your usual weapon. Magical? And thanks. Not all of them, but most. A good handful are refurbished, alterations, that sort of thing. Adventurers coming through, dropping off their trusty blades thinkin' they won't need 'em anymore because they went and got themselves something fancy and magical. I don't feel even a little bad laughing when they come crawling back because some sorceress or bandits swiped it and went running off into the wilderness."

"Maybe after I pick something out here, I'll let you have a look at it," Kanan offered. "It's not what I'd call magical, really, but not much of what we do back home is strictly considered magic, anyway."

Even if the Jedi were basically wizard-monks.

"And I don't blame you for laughing. A weapon is only part of what makes a knight. It's not worth much if you can't back that up with skill."

A knight, or warrior, or whatever. Look. He would've been a knight. He was allowed to cling to that one.

And skill was definitely something that was an...unpredictable trait among Daventry Knights, even with the tournament to attempt to sort out the apparently good ones. "More business for me, either way, so I guess I can't really complain," she said.

She looked around again, her expression going a little nostalgic, a little eager. Oh, it was going to be so nice to work again...

"Seeing anything that catches your eyes yet?" she prompted. "Or did you need help figuring out what to go for?"

"Hm..." Kanan made his way to the swords, leaning in to get a good look at them before reaching for a broadsword, lifting it in one hand easily to test the weight and balance. He liked it, but it didn't exactly scream to him that it was The One, either. He put it back and glanced back at Amaya over his shoulder. "Have you got any recommendations? Any favorites?"

Amaya watched him carefully, noting how he held the one he'd picked out, how he shifted it and tested its weight. "Hmmm," she said, rubbing her chin. "How'd that one feel for you? And what kind of weapon does the other person have? You said it's for training, right? Sparring and such?"

"It felt fine, but there wasn't any..." He frowned for a moment. "Any... pull, I suppose. It was good to hold, but I want something that wants me to swing it."

Which he hoped didn't sound as crazy as he suspected it might. He looked at the selection of swords again, and then nodded.

"It is for training," he added. "The sword my student brought home is sort of... intricate, especially for a broadsword. There's a lot of ornamental detail in the cross-guard, and it flares out again at the point. That's not strictly my style. I prefer function over fashion, so to speak. But it's a starting point."

"Just don't get too wrapped up in the romantic notion that there's always a special something with a weapon and its wielder," Amaya noted. "Sure, it can be a thing, it definitely happens, but a weapon, above all else, is a tool, there to do a job. Just because it doesn't pull doesn't mean it won't do the job...sometimes better than something that does pull."

But she said it in a thoughtful way, like she was just using the words to help fill in the gaps in her own consideration of the arsenal.

"Sounds almost like a leaf-blade. Well, and if you want function," she made a move to pull a sword from a rack, a very simple looking thing compared to some of the more spiky accents that was clearly a part of her favored style; she turned it in her hands to offer the handle out for Kanan to take, "can't go wrong with something really basic, to the point. It's a little plainer than what I usually do, but this piece was done so I could really focus on the leaf-blade itself. I've been meanin' to alter it, but just haven't gotten around to it yet, so maybe it was just waiting until you were done with it."

Kanan actually chuckled a little as Amaya spoke, nodding along. He understood what she was saying, absolutely. But his lightsaber had chosen him just as much as he'd built it. It was an interesting balance to consider.

He reached to take the sword, checking again for the weight and the balance. It had some decent heft to it, seemed to sit comfortably in his hand. After a moment of consideration, he slid into the opening stance of one of his forms, holding it up one-handed with little effort before bringing it back down again and grasping the hilt with both hands instead, slipping into the opening stance for a different lightsaber form entirely.

"It'll be an adjustment," he mused, straightening up and turning it this way and that, considering the craftsmanship in the blade itself, "but... you know, I like this? I think this will do nicely until I can commission something a little more personalized."

"It seems to suit you," said Amaya, nodding, grinning despite herself. Oh, she missed this, watching someone skilled handle a weapon like they knew what they were doing, going through the forms like a conversation, getting to know you, how do you do, let's just see how you fit, "even if it looks like you might be used to something a bit more...swishier? Does that make sense?"

"Perfect sense," Kanan agreed, grinning. Grinning. This felt good, holding a weapon, talking shop with somebody who clearly knew what they were talking about. "The blade I usually use is far more narrow. It's still surprisingly heavy, not that you'd know it to look at it, but it's got maneuverability that you just don't necessarily see in the more broad blades."

So, say, it was swishy!

"I know a few different forms, but the one I've used the most in battle is made up of smaller, faster movements. This is going to be an adjustment. But one I'm looking forward to."

"New can be good," Amaya said with a nod. "At the very least, it'll be interesting. And, hey, if you find out that it's not so good for you after all, come on back, we'll switch it out with a different one. There's still a whole 'nother room, too."

Granted, that one wasn't as impressive since she'd only just started using it for the spill-over, but still!

"I'll keep that in mind, but this one should do the trick in the meantime," Kanan mused. "I'll touch base and tell you how it's going at the next movie class or something, how's that sound?"

He'd definitely be using it before then, after all.
